The purpose of Project 1 is to introduce us to the basics of a vehicle. This chassis, bought by the Mechanical Engineering department, helps us understand the the principles of car dynamics first hand. This project also encourages us to get hands on work and see what it takes to build a working performance car.
We began our journey by assembling the project vehicle and learning how it is made. We then came up with a test that would allow us to evaluate the cars performance by driving it and collecting specific data. The test consisted of straight line acceleration and breaking and a five-turn slalom.
Data was collected using an accelerometer. This device provided 3-axis acceleration in terms of Earths gravitational acceleration. This information gives us a benchmark that we can compare the improvements of future modifications to.
